From January to September 2025, foreign tourist spending fell from $25 billion in 2024 to $21.8 billion. Indians' outbound spending dipped slightly, but the inbound drop created a $4.7 billion deficit. Only one quarter showed a surplus, and even that was lower than last year. What's Behind the Drop? Several things hurt visitor numbers. A terror attack in Pahalgam sparked security fears and tensions with Pakistan. Then came the Air India crash in June. A weaker rupee means hotels and tours earn less in dollars. Foreign arrivals fell too: 6.18 million from January to September 2025, down from 7.08 million the year before. Big markets like China, South Korea, Spain, UAE, and the Netherlands send few visitors. Global travel boomed with 1.4 billion trips in 2024, but India grabbed a tiny slice. Spending from internationals is still below pre-pandemic levels. Domestic Travel Saves the Day Don't worry for India's tourism pros yet. Domestic trips keep things humming. Hotels saw 70% occupancy from April to December 2025, same as last year. Room rates climbed from about $87 to $91 a night. ICRA predicts revenue growth this year, fueled by local leisure, weddings, events, and business travel. Premium hotels should hit 72-74% occupancy. Airlines like IndiGo eye international routes for stronger currency earnings. Long-Time Problems Need Fixes This isn't new. India skimps on marketing: overseas promotion budget slashed 97% to $350,000 in 2024. Visas are a hassle. Experts call for social media pushes on sustainability and real experiences. India has stunning spots like Rishikesh. But without smart plans, foreign dollars slip away while locals explore at home. Time to act beyond talk.
