WhatsApp bans 9.8 million Indian accounts in June WhatsApp, the Meta-owned messaging platform, has banned over 98 lakh (9.8 million) Indian accounts in June as part of its ongoing crackdown against abuse and harmful activities on the platform. This massive enforcement action underscores the company's intensified efforts to combat fraud, spam, and misinformation across its largest user base globally. The June ban represents part of WhatsApp's systematic approach to maintaining platform integrity in India, where it serves over 500 million users. The company operates under India's Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, which mandate monthly reporting on content moderation efforts. WhatsApp employs a three-stage abuse detection system that operates at registration, during messaging, and in response to user feedback. According to the company's transparency reports, a significant portion of banned accounts are identified proactively through artificial intelligence and machine learning tools before any user complaints are filed. The June crackdown follows a consistent pattern of large-scale account suspensions throughout 2025. In January, WhatsApp banned 99.67 lakh accounts, with 13.27 lakh removed proactively. February saw similar numbers with over 97 lakh bans, including 14 lakh proactive removals. "WhatsApp is an industry leader in preventing abuse, among end-to-end encrypted messaging services. Over the years, we have consistently invested in Artificial Intelligence and other state-of-the-art technology, data scientists and experts, and in processes, in order to keep our users safe on our platform," a company spokesperson stated. The escalating ban numbers reflect India's growing challenge with digital fraud and scams. Accounts are typically suspended for violations including bulk messaging, spam distribution, impersonation, phishing attacks, and spreading misinformation. WhatsApp's automated systems can detect suspicious behavior patterns such as mass messaging and unauthorized automated activity before users report them. The platform received thousands of user complaints each month, with action taken on accounts based on user reports, in addition to proactive enforcement measures. This dual approach of reactive and proactive moderation demonstrates WhatsApp's commitment to maintaining platform safety while complying with Indian regulatory requirements.
