EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) Launching October 12, 2025: What Travellers Need to Know Starting October 12, 2025, the European Union will begin the phased rollout of its new digital border control mechanism, the Entry/Exit System (EES). This automated system replaces the traditional manual passport stamping process and aims to enhance border security, streamline checks, and accurately track travel within the Schengen Area. The full implementation across all EU external borders is set to complete by April 10, 2026. The EES will apply to non-EU nationals, including Indian travellers, who visit any of the 29 Schengen countries for short stays, typically up to 90 days within a 180-day period. It records biometric data such as fingerprints and facial images, personal details from travel documents, and entry and exit dates. This data will be stored securely for three years, helping authorities detect overstayers and individuals using false identities. The system’s introduction will involve longer wait times at airports and border points initially, as biometric registration kiosks are installed and travelers get accustomed to the new process. European border agencies and transport operators are preparing for these changes to minimize inconvenience. Following the EES, the EU plans to launch the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) in late 2026 or early 2027. ETIAS will require travelers from visa-exempt countries to obtain travel authorization prior to entering the Schengen Area. While Indian nationals with a valid Schengen visa are not affected by ETIAS, they will still undergo EES biometric checks. Travelers to Europe should plan ahead, allowing extra time for border formalities and stay informed on the evolving requirements to ensure a smooth journey.
