Borealis is currently owned 75% by OMV and 25% by ADNOC, while Borouge is a joint venture between ADNOC (54%) and Borealis (36%). This consolidation would create a powerhouse in the global polyolefins market, combining the strengths of all three companies. ADNOC and OMV have been exploring ways to strengthen their partnership since 2023. Last year, ADNOC acquired a 24.9% stake in OMV from Mubadala, further solidifying its ties with the Austrian energy giant. The two companies had previously discussed merging Borouge and Borealis, which would have created a chemicals group with over $20 billion in annual sales. The potential acquisition of Nova Chemicals is seen as the next step in their strategy to dominate the petrochemicals industry. The deal is still in its early stages and requires approvals from the executive and supervisory boards of OMV and other involved parties. If successful, it would mark a significant move in the global energy and petrochemicals sector, reflecting the growing trend of consolidation among major players. By combining their resources and expertise, OMV and ADNOC aim to create a competitive entity capable of leading the polyolefins market on a global scale. This potential acquisition highlights the strategic importance of the petrochemicals industry and the increasing collaboration between international energy companies.
