Amazon has been consistently reducing its workforce over the past few years. After cutting jobs in 2022, 2023, and 2024, the company recently announced more layoffs. This time, the affected employees belong to the communications and sustainability divisions. The exact number of layoffs has not been disclosed, but an internal memo described the number as "small." According to Drew Herdener, Amazon’s head of public relations, the company needs to remove roles that have a narrow focus or create unnecessary management layers. In the last three years alone, Amazon has let go of 27,000 employees. Microsoft has also announced another round of layoffs. Employees across different departments were impacted, mainly those who did not meet the company's performance expectations. A report from Business Insider revealed that workers in Microsoft’s security division were among those affected. However, Microsoft's India and South Asia head, Puneet Chandok, confirmed that there would be no layoffs in India. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is following a similar path. CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed plans to lay off 3,600 employees. He stated that this decision aims to improve performance management and remove low-performing workers more quickly. The job cuts will affect about 5% of Meta’s workforce, which had 72,400 employees as of September. Zuckerberg described 2025 as a “challenging year” for the company, indicating that more changes could follow. Google has taken a slightly different approach. Instead of forced layoffs, the company is offering voluntary exit programs for employees in its Platforms & Devices team. This team handles products like Pixel, Android, Chrome, and Nest. Google employees in the U.S. can choose to leave the company with a severance package. This program gives employees the option to step away rather than being laid off. The tech industry has seen major changes in recent years, with AI playing a significant role in how companies operate. As automation continues to grow, businesses are re-evaluating their workforce, leading to more job cuts. Employees across various departments are being affected, and many companies are adjusting their strategies to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving world.
