Navjot found out about his predicament at the age of eight. "All my friends go to school, talk about what they want to be. I don’t even have that," he told local media. Tough Changes to Citizenship Law Navjot’s plight is directly related to a policy that ended New Zealand's birthright citizenship in 2006. Since then, children born in New Zealand after January 1, 2006, can only gain citizenship if at least one parent already holds citizenship or permanent residency at the time of their birth. This law was passed for reasons of border security and demographic control, has left Navjot, and others in similar situations, effectively stateless. No Hope in “Home” or in India Navjot’s wish was to gain residency in the only country he has ever called home. His lawyer pursued every available option, including a residency application via ministerial intervention. But Associate Immigration Minister Chris Penk rejected the final appeal, leaving Navjot with no legal avenue to stay. Navjot is now fearful about his forced relocation to India, stating, "I don’t think I’ll survive in India. I don’t speak Hindi. I’ve heard that people with higher qualifications can’t find jobs there, so what would I do?" With no family or support network in India, and having never been to school, his future is uncertain. Public and Community Outcry Community leaders, human rights advocates, and politicians have condemned the deportation. Daljit Singh, president of New Zealand’s Supreme Sikh Society, characterized the case as a shameful example of punishing children for their parents’ mistakes. Immigration lawyer Alastair McClymont described the decision as “inhumane,” highlighting that many countries, including Australia and the UK, grant citizenship to children who have spent years growing up locally, regardless of their parents' status. The Green Party’s immigration spokesperson Ricardo Menendez March also criticized the policy, noting that deporting children to unfamiliar countries causes trauma, breaks up essential community ties, and ignores the humanitarian aspects of law. A Symbol of a Bigger Problem Navjot Singh’s case is not unique but exposes the harsh realities and unintended consequences of strict immigration laws.
