Expected to arrive later in 2025, Llama 4 is being positioned as a transformative force, potentially changing how businesses and developers interact with AI altogether. And with agentic AI — a system that can autonomously perform multi-step tasks — on the horizon, Llama 4 could unlock a new era of intelligent automation. According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Llama 4 is expected to be ten times more compute-intensive to train compared to its predecessor, signaling just how ambitious this model truly is. In Zuckerberg’s own words: “Llama 4 will have agentic capabilities, so it’s going to be novel and it’s going to unlock a lot of new use cases.” These agentic capabilities refer to AI systems that don’t just respond to commands, but proactively act on behalf of users — capable of reasoning, planning, and executing tasks across platforms like web browsers, APIs, and productivity tools. Essentially, Llama 4 is being trained to operate more like a digital employee or engineer, instead of just a chatbot. This represents a major leap from Llama 3, which launched with 8 billion parameters in April 2024 and was later upgraded to a staggering 405 billion parameters in August. Llama 4 is expected to scale even further, offering significantly more power and intelligence. Meta is also focused on ensuring this AI infrastructure is built to last. With over 700 million monthly users already engaging with Meta’s AI features across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, the tech giant is preparing a 2-gigawatt AI data center and plans to invest up to $65 billion this year alone to support the compute demands of its AI ambitions. Clara Shih, Meta’s Head of Business AI, highlighted how Llama 4 could transform businesses, particularly small enterprises. With more than 200 million small businesses connected to Meta globally, the goal is to equip each with an AI that can serve as a customer service agent, a marketing assistant, and a sales tool — all in one. “Each of those businesses are going to have these AIs that represent them,” Shih said, aiming to automate repetitive tasks and operate 24/7 in the business's own voice. However, Zuckerberg did set realistic expectations. While Llama 4 will bring the foundations of this new agentic model to life, he anticipates that widespread deployment of fully autonomous AI engineers may not happen until 2026. “This is going to be the year where it really starts to become possible and lays the groundwork for a much more dramatic change in 2026 and beyond,” he said. Beyond functionality, Llama 4 also represents Meta’s push for open-source dominance in the AI space, aiming to provide a viable alternative to closed systems like OpenAI’s GPT-4 or Google’s Gemini. As the ecosystem around Llama grows, infrastructure and developer tools are likely to be optimized for it, bringing down operational costs and enabling faster innovation.
