Light Pollution Threatens the Very Large Telescope in Chile A planned renewable energy project in Chile is raising concerns among astronomers, as it could severely impact the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT). Experts warn that light pollution from the project may reduce the telescope’s capacity by up to 30%, hindering its ability to observe distant galaxies and study exoplanets. Light pollution occurs when excessive or poorly directed artificial light brightens the night sky, making it difficult to observe celestial objects. This phenomenon is akin to trying to see stars while standing under a bright streetlight. An Ideal Location Under Threat Located in Chile’s Atacama Desert, the VLT benefits from some of the darkest skies on Earth, making it one of the best places for astronomical observations. However, the INNA project—a $10 billion industrial park planned by US-based AES Energy—poses a significant threat to this environment. The park will span over 3,021 hectares and include solar farms, wind farms, hydrogen production facilities, and battery storage systems. Parts of the project will be just 5 kilometers (3 miles) from Mount Paranal, where the VLT is based. ESO estimates that the light pollution generated by the INNA project will be comparable to a city of 20,000 people, increasing the brightness of the night sky by up to 10%. Potential Impact on Space Exploration ESO Director General Xavier Barcons has expressed serious concerns about the project’s effects: Barcons highlighted that mitigating the effects of light pollution would require costly investments in advanced technology or relocation to a darker site—both of which could slow progress in space exploration. A Need for Balance While renewable energy projects are crucial for combating climate change, experts emphasize the importance of finding solutions that do not compromise scientific progress. Without mitigation measures, the INNA project risks undermining the capabilities of one of the world’s most advanced telescopes and delaying discoveries about our universe.
