Life’s Building Blocks Found in Samples from Asteroid Bennu Scientists have found key ingredients for life in rock and dust samples collected from asteroid Bennu. These samples, brought to Earth by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, contain 14 of the 20 amino acids that help build proteins, along with all five nucleobases, which are essential for DNA and RNA. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft landed on Bennu in 2020 and collected the samples , which were sent back to Earth in 2023 . The return capsule safely parachuted into the Utah desert , allowing scientists to study the material for clues about the early solar system and the origins of life. Recent studies published in Nature Astronomy Paper revealed that the samples contained a mix of organic compounds, including amino acids . Researchers also found minerals that formed when salty water evaporated on Bennu’s parent body, suggesting that the original asteroid had a wet environment where complex chemistry could have occurred. The presence of nucleobases, the genetic components of DNA and RNA, further supports the idea that the basic materials for life existed in space billions of years ago . Scientists believe that asteroids like Bennu may have delivered these essential chemicals to early Earth. Billions of years ago, our planet and other celestial bodies were bombarded by space rocks carrying water and organic molecules. This strengthens the theory that life’s building blocks may have come from space. NASA scientist Danny Glavin noted that the discovery suggests such life-related compounds are widespread in the solar system , increasing the possibility that life could exist beyond Earth. While organic compounds similar to those found in Bennu have been detected in meteorites that landed on Earth, those meteorites could have been contaminated by Earth’s environment. The Bennu samples , however, were collected directly from space and kept uncontaminated , confirming their extraterrestrial origin. Bennu likely came from a much larger, icy asteroid that formed about 4.5 billion years ago. Over time, this body broke apart, creating smaller asteroids like Bennu. Scientists believe that some of the ice inside this original asteroid melted and formed brine, which may have provided the right conditions for simple molecules to combine into more complex ones. Although the samples contain amino acids and nucleobases, they do not include complete DNA or RNA molecules. As NASA scientist Jason Dworkin explained, these compounds are still far from forming anything that could be considered living. Life as we know it requires much more complex chemical systems that can replicate and evolve. This discovery strengthens the idea that asteroids like Bennu could have helped bring the building blocks of life to Earth. It also raises intriguing questions about whether similar processes may have led to life elsewhere in the universe.
