Italy commits up to €1 billion to support AI, cybersecurity, and quantum tech under its new law. Italy has just become the first EU country to pass a national law regulating artificial intelligence. While the EU’s AI Act sets the broader framework, Italy’s version adds its own rules that directly affect everyday use, business operations, and public services. At its core, the law insists that AI should be transparent, accountable, and always under human oversight. That means doctors, teachers, and judges can use AI, but the final say must remain with people, not machines. Parents now have more control too: children under 14 cannot use AI tools without parental consent. The government is also drawing a hard line against harmful uses of AI. Deepfakes that cause damage could lead to up to five years in prison. Fraud, identity theft, or other crimes committed with AI will face tougher penalties than usual. On the creative side, copyright only applies when humans contribute genuine intellectual effort, not just when a model spits something out. Companies using AI in workplaces must tell their employees. Patients must be told if AI is involved in their healthcare. In short, the law pushes for openness so people know when and how AI is at play. To enforce all this, Italy is setting up oversight through existing national agencies. At the same time, it is backing innovation with money: up to €1 billion from a state fund will go into AI, cybersecurity, and related technologies. The challenge now is implementation. The rules look strong on paper, but how regulators apply them will decide whether Italy has found the right balance between protecting people and encouraging innovation. Other countries will be watching closely.
