What is Quantum Physics? To understand quantum computers, we first need to understand the science behind them. That science is quantum physics. Normal physics explains how the big things around us work. It explains why a ball rolls when you kick it, and why things fall down when you drop them. Quantum physics is different. It is the study of the smallest things in our universe. We are talking about atoms, and the even smaller particles inside those atoms, like electrons. When you zoom in that close, the normal rules of the world stop working. Tiny particles can do things that seem impossible, like walking through walls or being in two places at the same time. To make sense of this strange world, we need to look at its two most famous rules. Superposition and the Spinning Coin In our everyday world, an object can only be in one state at a time. A light switch is either on or off. A door is either open or closed. In the quantum world, particles can exist in multiple states at the same time. This is called superposition. Think of a coin. When qubits are linked, the processing power of the computer does not just increase by adding numbers, it multiplies exponentially. The Differences Between Normal and Quantum Computers It is easy to think that quantum computers will eventually replace our daily technology, but that is not the case. They are meant for completely different jobs. Why Do We Need Quantum Computers? If normal computers are already so fast, why are scientists spending billions of dollars to build quantum ones? The answer is that some problems are simply too big for normal computers to handle. Creating New Medicines To create a new medicine, scientists need to understand how different molecules interact with each other. A normal computer has to simulate these interactions one by one, which can take years. A quantum computer can simulate all the chemical reactions at once, helping us find cures for diseases in days instead of decades. Fixing Global Traffic and Logistics Imagine a delivery company trying to find the absolute best routes for thousands of trucks traveling across the world every day. There are billions of choices to make when you count weather, traffic, and fuel. Quantum computers can calculate the perfect plan for every truck instantly, saving massive amounts of energy and time. The Reality Check Before you get too excited, you should know that you will not have a quantum iPhone anytime soon. Quantum computers are incredibly fragile. Qubits need to be kept in special refrigerators that are colder than deep space. If the room warms up even a tiny bit, or if there is too much vibration, the qubits stop spinning and the computer crashes. Because of this, quantum computers stay inside high-tech laboratories owned by large tech companies and universities. People will likely use them in the future through cloud networks, rather than owning one at home. Quantum physics showed us that nature plays by a set of wild, magical rules.
