India Unveils Vikram: First Fully Indigenous Semiconductor Chip India has achieved a historic milestone by unveiling its first fully indigenous semiconductor chip, the Vikram 32-bit processor, presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Semicon India 2025. This achievement marks a defining moment in the country's ambitious journey to become a global semiconductor powerhouse and reduce dependency on chip imports. The Unveiling Ceremony During the inauguration of Semicon India 2025 in New Delhi, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw handed over the Vikram processor and a set of test chips developed under various approved projects to Prime Minister Modi. The Vikram 3 2-bit processor was designed and fabricated by ISRO’s Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) , demonstrating India's rapid technological advancements within just three and a half years of the launch of the India Semiconductor Mission. The Vikram processor is fully indigenous and built to withstand the harsh environmental conditions typical of space launch vehicles, significantly benefiting India's aerospace and technology sectors. Apart from this flagship chip, several test chips fabricated through student-led initiatives and startup programs were also presented, reflecting India’s emphasis on fostering innovation and talent development in the semiconductor ecosystem. Policy Support and Infrastructure Growth India’s semiconductor push is backed by robust policy support, highlighted by a ₹76,000 crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, of which nearly ₹65,000 crore is already committed. As of 2025, five semiconductor manufacturing units are under construction, with more in the pipeline, and two fabrication facilities already operational. This has attracted major global equipment and materials partners, cementing India’s reputation as a stable and rapidly growing hub in the sector. Talent and Global Trust India’s semiconductor growth is not limited to manufacturing. The country is developing a deep talent pool, with 78 universities using advanced Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools and Indian students designing and manufacturing chips showcased at Semicon India 2025. With nearly 20% of the global semiconductor workforce, India is poised to become a key global player . Prime Minister Modi and Minister Vaishnaw both emphasized that the world now looks to India with growing trust and confidence, expecting the country to play a transformative role in global technological change. Modi asserted that the day is not far when the world will recognize products "Designed in India, Made in India, Trusted by the World". The presentation of the Vikram 32-bit processor serves as a testament to India’s engineering prowess and visionary policy leadership. With strengthened infrastructure, global partnerships, and a focus on innovation, India stands ready to drive the next wave of technological transformation and become a lighthouse of stability and growth in the global semiconductor industry.
