A Complete and Easy to Understand Guide to Kubernetes Architecture Kubernetes is a system that helps run and manage container based applications at a large scale. The diagram of the cluster shows several important parts working together. Even though the image may look complex, the design follows a clear and simple idea. A Kubernetes cluster is divided into the control plane and the worker nodes. The control plane makes decisions while the nodes run the actual applications. Once this relationship becomes clear, the entire architecture becomes easy to understand. The Control Plane as the Central Brain The control plane sits at the center of every Kubernetes cluster and acts as the decision maker. Its job is to understand what the user wants and guide the cluster to reach that goal. When someone deploys an application, scales a service, or removes a resource, the request travels through the control plane. The control plane processes the request, checks the current state of the cluster, and makes sure the system behaves exactly as intended. The Role of the API Server The API server is the gateway for all communication. Every command that enters the cluster passes through it. Tools, scripts, and system components all rely on the API server to read or update information. When you create a deployment or check the logs of a pod, the API server handles the request. It connects with the rest of the control plane and also updates the stored cluster state when needed. Understanding etcd and the Cluster State Etcd is the database that stores the entire state of the cluster. It does not work like a traditional database with rows or tables. Instead, it stores simple key value pairs. These values describe everything in the cluster such as pods, nodes, configurations, and desired counts. When the API server receives a new request, it records changes in etcd . This creates a source of truth that the entire cluster can rely on. The Scheduler and How Pods Find a Home When you ask Kubernetes to run a pod, the scheduler decides where that pod should go. It examines available nodes and checks their resources. It looks at CPU, memory, and other requirements. After studying all the possible choices, it selects the best node for the workload. The scheduler does not start the pod itself. It only decides the placement and then sends its decision back to the API server. How the Controller Manager Maintains the Desired State The controller manager constantly watches the cluster. It compares the actual state with the desired state. If something does not match, the controller manager takes action to correct it. For example, if you ask for five pods and only four exist, it creates another. If a pod fails or a node becomes unavailable, it makes adjustments. The controller manager is the silent worker that keeps everything aligned without needing manual intervention. The Cloud Controller Manager and External Resources In cloud environments, the cloud controller manager adds an extra layer of integration. It communicates directly with the cloud provider. It can create load balancers, attach storage volumes, or register new virtual machines that can join the cluster as nodes. The dashed line in the diagram shows how this component reaches beyond the cluster to talk to the cloud provider. This makes Kubernetes capable of managing both internal and external resources in a seamless way. Worker Nodes and Their Purpose While the control plane handles decisions, the worker nodes handle the real tasks. Nodes are the machines that run applications. Each node in the diagram contains its own copies of kubelet and kube proxy . These components work together to launch containers inside pods, keep them healthy, and make sure they can communicate with the rest of the cluster. The Kubelet as the Node Level Manager The kubelet is the agent that runs on every worker node. It listens for instructions from the API server. When the scheduler assigns a pod to a node, the kubelet makes sure the pod is created. It cooperates with the container runtime to start, stop, or restart containers. It also reports the health of the node and the pods. The kubelet ensures that the node stays in sync with the desired state defined by the control plane. The Role of Kube Proxy in Networking Kube proxy manages network rules inside the node. It makes sure that pods can reach other pods and that services can direct traffic correctly. Without kube proxy , network communication inside the cluster would not function smoothly. It works with the networking system to route traffic and maintain connectivity between applications running on different nodes. Pods as the Smallest Work Units Pods represent the smallest building blocks of a Kubernetes cluster. A pod contains one or more containers that run the application code. The diagram shows pods inside each worker node. When a pod is created, the kubelet and container runtime work together to launch the containers. Kubernetes manages pods, not individual containers, because pods allow containers to share resources like network space and storage. The Container Runtime and CRI The container runtime is the engine that actually runs containers. Kubernetes does not run containers directly. Instead, it uses the Container Runtime Interface . Through this interface, Kubernetes can work with different engines like containerd or CRI O. This makes the system flexible. The Cloud Provider and External Connections The cloud provider shown on the right side of the diagram represents the external systems that Kubernetes can interact with. Many clusters rely on cloud resources for load balancing, storage, or additional nodes. The cloud controller manager manages this communication. It allows Kubernetes to expand beyond the boundaries of the cluster and use the tools offered by the cloud provider.
